Math 'Mid-Year' and a Journal Entry to Wrap Up Say it with Symbols

Home Nugget #18
Assigned on Monday April 7, 2008
Due on Wednesday April 9, 2008

Students took the Boston Public Schools-issued math mid-year today which consisted of 17 multiple-choice and 3 open response questions and included material from September right up to our present topic of symbolic notation. Given that our 7th graders are covering an 8th grade curriculum and essentially covered the basics of 7th grade math in a matter of weeks, the mid-year was given at this advanced point of the school year to assess whether students are grasping the main ideas presented thus far.

Tonight's home nugget is the 2nd Journal Entry of the 4th term and challenges students with a variety of questions, all derived from Say it with Symbols. The directions for the journal entry can be found at http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcszzgg_86cnb934d6

Tomorrow's planned exam will be postponed until later next week such that we can start a new book tomorrow titled The Shapes of Algebra, a text that intertwines geometry and algebra concepts.
