Puzzles and Functions and other Math Mysteries

Today marks our return to a 'regular' instructional schedule as the ELA MCAS for 2008 have ended. (Next up in May are the Math MCAS followed by the Science in June)

Warning notices will be turned in to the registrar this Monday, marking the halfway point of the 4th term which ends on May 2. Look for snapgrades to be updated to reflect present standings.

This weekend's home nugget follows:

Home Nugget #12
Assigned on Friday March 28, 2008
Due on Monday March 31, 2008

In an attempt to provide closure for the book Say it with Symbols and to implore students to learn better study habits, the following lesson is prescribed:

At this point of the school year, students are very familiar with the general format for my assessments. Using quiz and test #1 of the 4th term as templates, they are to design their own test based on Investigations 4 and 5 of Say it with Symbols. There must be a total of 12 questions, 6 from each investigation. Students are also required to answer all 12 test questions.

Bear the following criteria in mind as you design your test:

  1. Start out by identifying the most important concepts in a chapter. Then choose problems that relate to these concepts in a meaningful way.
  2. The majority of your test questions should be multi-step
  3. A good deal of the test questions should require evidence of work done or an explanation
  4. Test questions should be reasonable in the sense that they focus on content covered in a series of lessons but should also be rigorous and challenging enough to reveal the test-taker's problem-solving ability.
  5. Creativity and originality in question design are crucial.

FCAs 12 available points!
4 points: student presents 12 legitimate test questions
4 points: student solves all 12 test questions in their entirety
4 points: student meets the criteria detailed above
