Students are preparing to enter the last week of the 1st term. (Term 1 ends on October 26) and used class time today to orient themselves on some expectations.
We reviewed the home nugget policy (format, grading and expectations) as well as talked specifics about what constitutes quality explanations. Students were reminded that they have a number of exemplar lessons to use as models for how their work should be done.
We also conducted a silent lecture today which involves no teacher talk and places the onus for understanding on students. I simply modeled the solution process for three equations and students were expected to help each other understand the logic involved.
Finally, we took the opportunity to practice finding slopes of equations and graphs, again a process that students were responsible for discovering.
