Making Predictions About Linear Relationships

Today marked a critical stage of our math explorations as students realized that while graphical and tabular representations of linear relationships are useful, there is great potential in the equations we can write for these relationships.

However, to fully maximize our use of these equations, we must first master a number of general math skills/concepts. And so we will be taking an approximately two week long detour, beginning in the next few days, where we will cover the following topics using an alternative text and lots of inquiry during class time.

  • Integers and integer operations
  • Creating and evaluating algebraic expressions
  • Order of operations
  • Solving simple equations

For many students, this time will be a welcome diversion because it will more closely resemble strategies they were accustomed to in elementary or early middle school years. Students should be aware that we will ultimately be returning to our CMP curriculum and to more literacy-based problems.
