We spoke about three major topics today after having made a strong argument for why this math detour is needed. The gist of the argument was that we want to be able to solve simple equations so that we can have an additional tool (besides creating tables and graphs) for problem solving.
Topics:
1. Integers- "Integers. integers - what's really in a name? The counting numbers, their opposites and zero are their claim to fame." This poem was shared with students in hopes of defining the number family known as the integers with them.
2. Absolute value - a simple way of asking "how far is a number from zero?" For example the absolute value of -14 is 14 and the absolute value of 21 is 21.
3. Variable Expressions - a math phrase containing a variable. Examples are 6x, 4 + 2x and -4x + 9. Expressions are NOT equations. Do you know what is different about them?
