Diving into an Exploration of Linear Relationships

Today's objectives (presented in class) should provide a clear idea of what we are trying to achieve over the course of the next few days.

  • Learn to recognize linear relationships from tables and graphs (and eventually, equations)
  • Learn that a change in rate will change the steepness of a line
  • Learn that for each unit change in one variable, there is a constant rate of change to the other variable.

We spent a considerable amount of time today discussing students ideas of what linear relationships are and how to recognize them in addition to thinking about what equations are and whether students have used them in the past. To explore the last two bulleted points of our objective we used a fictitious Segway ( http://www.segway.com/) rental scenario; imagining ourselves having to select from three companies offering different rates.

As always I encourage you to look over your child's class notes and talk with them about the day's lesson. The more opportunity they have to conduct these conversations, the better they will retain and understand topics we study.
