Summary:
With 9 days remaining in the 2nd term, students began an exploration of exponential relationships today. No formal definition of the term was provided to them; rather they are investigating a scenario (pasted below) that allows them to discover for themselves what patterns will characterize an exponential relationship. The idea is to furnish a learning experience that is personal, individualized and meaningful.
Here is one of the two scenarios that students thought about today. Each scenario was accompanied by questions that the student was responsible for responding to.
You are a world-renowned student and the television industry has heard about your incomparable intellect. You are invited by two different trivia game shows to compete with other acclaimed brainiacs. Your schedule only allows you to accept one invitation and you decide to try and figure out which game show will offer the most prize money based on the information that follows.
Game Show A:
The first question you answer correctly is worth $50.00 and each question that follows and is answered correctly is worth an additional $50.00.
Game Show B:
The first question you answer correctly is worth $0.10 and each question that follows and is answered correctly is worth double the previous question. (For instance, the second question would be worth $0.20)
