Solving Simple Equations Using the Three Principles

Students negotiated basic equations in their heads to start the class off. For instance, a student refuses to reveal his or her age but does say that in 10 years they will be 22 years old. We agreed to formally represent the student's age with the variable x and to write the equation:

x + 10 = 22

This was the starting point for investigating how to solve equations involving only addition and subtraction and students were advised to follow three principles:
1. Isolate the variable
2. Use 'opposite' operations
3. Balance the equation

Tonight's home nugget is a chance to put these principles into practice:

Home Nugget #17
Assigned on Monday October 2, 2006
Due Tuesday October 3, 2006
Practice Sheet for section 4-2 problems 1 - 28
All problems to be solved on a separate sheet of paper with work shown and answers checked (using the balancing of equations)

Focus Correction Areas
2 points: all work shown, problems solved and problems checked
2 points: two random problems will be graded for accuracy
