Moving Straight Ahead - The Exploration of Linear Relationships

Students received a copy of the textbook Moving Straight Ahead today and we began to think about what this book holds in store for us.

We used a writing activity known as a TPRC (Think/Predict/Read/Connect) to brainstorm what math concepts the book may reveal based on the cover illustrations and title.

Each chapter in the book is known as an Investigation because it is based on some sort of exploration of a problem or scenario that should get students thinking about the topics being convered.

We conducted the first exploration which involved dropping a rubber ball from different heights as measured by a meterstick and asked ourselves how the corresponding bounce heights should vary. We organized our resulting data into a table and are now thinking about how to present this data set in a graphical form.

Tonight's home nugget continues the theme of solving equations as students will be tested on this concept either this week or early next.

Home Nugget #22
Assigned on Tuesday October 10, 2006
Due Wednesday October 11, 2006
