Building Confidence With One-Step Equations and Taking Peeks at Two-Step Equations

REMINDER!!!
Parents, forms for after school tutoring are now available and the seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Ask your child for the form if they have not shown it to you.

In addition to the solving of equations, we have been spending time trying to figure out the relationships among signs in math, that is, the addition and subtraction signs versus positive and negative signs.

Students must eventually come to the following conclusions based on the work we have done:

Conclusion 1:
Subtracting a number is like adding that number's negative value:
For example:

9 - 3 = 6 means the same thing as 9 + (-3) = 6

Conclusion 2:
Adding a number is like subtracting that number's negative value:
For example:

9 + 3 = 12 means the same thing as 9 - (-3) = 12

Understanding these relationships makes understanding the 'big picture' much easier.
