On this first day back from the February recess, students were asked to contend with a 100 point test consisting of 11 open response questions that covered skills covered from September all the way through quadratic relationships.
This sort of assessment is often referred to as a 'cold' test in that it is unannounced and no specific prior preparation, other than the coursework we engage in daily, is provided. I explained to students that such an assessment is an indicator both of student mastery of material as well as a reflection of how effectively I have or have not taught the content.
Students were given the whole class period to work on this test and then given the liberty to take it home and complete it to their satisfaction. I encouraged collaboration if it was for the purpose of understanding material, not simply finding solutions.
