Formalizing Guidelines For Solving Equations

Students independently solved three unique equations in class today. They then looked for common strategies used in all three situations for finding solutions. They came to a consensus regarding ideas that always seem to help in solving equations.
They are as follows:

1. Simplify if possible
2. Use opposite operations
3. Respect the mirror (do to one side of the equation what you do to the other)
4. Isolate the variable
5. Balance the equation (to check the solution)
