Students are being afforded a second day to guarantee mastery of the content presented in Investigations 1 - 3 of Say it With Symbols.
Once more it should be emphasized that studying and preparing for an assessment is a learned PROCESS and students are expected to fully engage in this process.
For example, a student opens up to Investigation I of the text on page 5 and should ask themselves, "What is the big idea I am expected to know?" or "What sorts of problems/questions do I predict the teacher will ask of me?"
The student should identify the main theme of the first Investigation as being about Order of Operations and that each section introduces new operations in the following order: addition, multiplication, subtraction, division, parentheses, and exponents. Pages 12 through 18 are a place where the student should select representative problems to think through and solve. Problems should include; instances where an expression is provided and the student must evaluate the expression for a given variable, formulas which require order of operations to find an accurate solution and so on...
I continue to encourage all students to look through and examine Investigations 1 - 3 with a fine-toothed comb in preparation for Test #2 tomorrow.
