Today marked the third day that students thought about and constructed equation and graph models for data.
The central theme of this book, Thinking with Math Models, is incredibly important to understand. We want students to understand that "imperfect" data exists everywhere and that it is a natural human tendency to insist on looking for trends and patterns in that imperfect data.
Consider the example of an engineer trying to decide how to alleviate traffic patterns on a busy road. Certain times of the day, weather patterns or road conditions all play a role in determining flow of traffic. Is such data absolutely predictable? Never. But there are definitely trends and patterns that one can consider in creating a better roadway.
In our curriculum, we are concerned mostly with data patterns that tend to resemble linear relationships but ARE NOT linear. Students are creating approximate equations that are the BEST FIT or MODELS for these data sets.
Home Nugget #10
Assigned on Thursday November 9, 2006
Due on Monday November 13, 2006
Any student not finished with Journal Entry #1 of the 2nd Term titled "Crossing the River" should take the notebook home and finish the entry. The directions should be inside the notebook as well.
