Improving Individual Accountability with Good Classroom Dialogue

Today marked our first day using a 'name lottery,' a system in which students ae kept on their toes and made to feel accountable for their contributions to the class. All names are written on a deck of index cards and shuffled. A card is chosen and that student is asked to respond to a question that is posed. Here are the rules for the 'name lottery.'

You MUST attempt a response if called upon! (whether by revealing your present understanding of the problem or the solution and how you found it)
If you are unwilling to respond, you collect an X. Once you have accumulated 3 X's, you are penalized by having a home nugget grade changed into a zero. Clearly, this hurts the overall grade.
If you DO attempt a response, you earn a checkmark. Once you have accumulated 3 checkmarks, two extra points will be added to a home nugget; helping raise the overall grade.
